Message I figure this information may be useful to anyone who has a Howe radiator whether or not it's in... I called a bunch of places last Friday to get mine re-welded. I called about 10 places, first I'd call a weld shop that either said "TIG Welding" or "Heli-Arc." When they heard the word "radiator" they'd refer me to radiator shop X who I'd call to find out they only do torch welding. Finally I came upon a guy who really does TIG welding and said that he'd do my radiator with no problem. He said the places that turned me down were most likely MIG welding shops that advertised "Heli-Arc" welding. MIG welding apparently is very pourous and would not be good for this application. The welder I went to said the military won't use MIG welding on their equipment so why should I? He was cool.

So he re-welded the radiator for a little more than I expected ($100 instead of $60) but he put on a new outlet pipe that's the same size as stock (the inlet pipe is the right size, just needs a little angle tweak). The thing he was concerned about was not putting on a pipe with a "lip" to help hold the hose/clamp on like the original. But, almost magically, he found a pipe in his shop that was the right diameter and had the lip. But if he couldn't find a pipe with a lip he said he could just as easily welded an extra "ring" near the end to act as a lip.

So he did it in about 2 hours, then I picked it up to measure the capacity differences between it and the stock one. All I did was block the inlet and outlet on both with saran wrap and a rubber band and filled 'em up. Here are the results:

Stock Radiator: 1.6L
Howe Radiator: 3.75L

These are approximate readings. Accounting for error (water I really spilled :), I rounded the Howe measurement down to 3.7L. Anyway the Howe has more than two times the capacity, a full 2.1L more! So now the capacity of my manual 300ZXTT should effectively go from 9.0L up to 11.1L.

I took the radiator to the shop where I'm getting a motor rebuild done (another story for another day), and had a chance to drop it in to check the fit (real easy since the motor was out :) It should fit just fine, all I need to do is figure out how to mount it. Jeremy [BadZCar (FL)], how did you mount it in your TT?

Hope this helps some people. Email me if you have questions,

Justin

Z is now in the shop for a rebuild... but April hours will bing May powers!
